17 PEOPLE VANISH ON ROAD WITHOUT A TRACE

Albuquerque, N.M. -- At least 17 people are known to have
disappeared without a trace after starting down the short stretch
of highway that authorities are calling "The Road to Nowhere!"
Neither New Mexico State Police nor the Department of Tourism is
talking about the mysterious nine-mile stretch on which drivers --
and in some cases, entire families -- vanish along with their cars.
But an insider tells Weekly World News that officials won't be able
to keep the lid on the situation much longer.
"What we have here is nothing less than an American Devil's Tri-
angle," said the source, a New Mexico law enforcement officer, who
asked that we not reveal his name.
"It swallows people up."
"The road turns off interstate 40 and leads up to the base of the
San Mateo Mountains where it just dead ends. Lots of people like
to drive out there to admire the view.
"But now the word is out and locals stay off that road.
"There's a cafe at the turn-off where tourists often stop to eat
before starting down that straight patch of road.
"They leave, but they don't come back."
Waitresses and cooks confirm that they've been besieged with
inquiries from friends and loved ones of missing drivers.
One of the most alarming cases is that of Chicago tourist Tom
Waldrout's wife Millie, their son Joe and daughter Lisa.
Waitresses at the cafe overheard Mrs. Waldrout suggest the family
drive out to see the view. Mr. Waldrout said he didn't feel like
taking the drive and suggested his wife take the kids down the
road while he enjoyed his coffee.
She said they'd be back in an hour. But they never returned.
The officer who gave us the interview says that spcial invest-
igators, scientists, even psychics have been consulted about the
17 reported disappearances, but they remain a mystery.
"There's no place to turn off that road," he says. "Nothing but
desert on either side. They just evaporate into thin air."
